A 27-year-old man critically injured in a recent road accident has made a miraculous recovery following emergency spinal surgery at Narayana RN Tagore Hospital in Mukundapur. The patient, previously healthy, was rushed to the hospital’s Emergency Room just hours after the accident.
Man makes recovery after spinal surgery
He had suffered an incomplete spinal cord injury at the T4-T5 level, along with multiple rib fractures and a closed head injury. Following urgent MRI and X-ray scans, the hospital’s spine team, led by Dr. Sai Viksheth Raj Basan, performed emergency spinal decompression and posterior instrumentation. This relieved spinal pressure and stabilised the thoracic spine, averting the risk of irreversible paralysis.
Emergency surgery helps prevent permanent paralysis
“This was a race against time,” said Dr. Basani. “Had we waited even a few hours, the incomplete injury might have become complete, leading to permanent disability.” The head injury was managed with neurological monitoring, and the rib fractures were treated conservatively.
Timely treatment and patient willpower key
The patient remained hospitalised for two weeks and began neuro-rehabilitation from the very first day. Over the next three months, he steadily regained bladder and bowel control, achieved independent mobility, and eventually returned to his normal routine. Doctors involved in the treatment said the case highlights the impact of timely and coordinated medical care. “From emergency intervention to rehabilitation, every step mattered. The team responded quickly, and the patient gave it everything he had,” said R. Venkatesh, one of the senior clinicians.
Family calls recovery nothing short miraculous
The recovery, they added, was a reflection of both surgical precision and the patient’s determination to bounce back. For the family, it felt nothing short of miraculous. “We feared the worst,” a relative said. “But seeing him walk again today is the greatest gift we could ask for.”
